Algiers - 'Shook'

7/10

Ever since they first arrived back in 2015 with their breakthrough self-titled debut LP, Algiers have always looked to create something more atmospheric and impactful than their peers. Largely looking towards soul and gospel inspiration to broaden their distinctive alt-rock direction, they have conceived this wonderfully rich and euphoric catalogue over the last decade that has served them incredibly well on the International stage. But now they are looking for a more varied influence as they return with their fourth full-length 'Shook', a record that invites numerous others to join their journey.

The most notable addition to this new collection is its expansive list of contributors. WIth Rage Against The Machine's Zack De La Rocha, Boy Harsher's Jae Matthews, Big Rube, billy woods and many more joining the ranks, 'Shook' instantly cements itself as their most adventurous and daring offerings to date. Still harnessing that dark and progressive energy they have always looked to conjure, the flurry of outside collaborators this time around adds a more diverse and eclectic feel to the release, making for an exciting and unpredictable listen throughout.

While its seventeen-track runtime does occasionally feel bloated from time to time, 'Shook' still manages to pack plenty of fresh and blistering anthems into it. Raw and uncompromising within its style, Algiers are continuing to extend their musical horizons and keep that inventive spark burning bright within them.
