The Avalanches - 'We Will Always Love You'

7/10

It is hard to think that there was a time when we thought The Avalanches were this single glimmer on the music scene. With the release of their incredible debut album 'Since I Left You' in 2001 going down in infamy as one of the greatest bodies of work in the twenty-first century, we would have to wait until 2016 for the band to regroup and offer an equally exciting follow-up in the form of 'Wallflower'. Now it feels like we won't be shaking them loose ever again as they cap off 2020 with another full-length collection, 'We Will Always Love You', delivering more of that rich and spellbinding aesthetic they are known for.

What is most notable about this new record is not just the length, with twenty-five tracks clocking in at more than seventy minutes, but just how many guest artists have looked to contribute to it. Blood Orange, MGMT, Leon Bridges, Jamie xx, Karen O, and literally dozens more don the tracklist on this new venture, instantly making it one of their most diverse and expansive projects to date. And while it may not completely live up to their knockout debut album, it makes for a warm and inviting offering that looks to bring a much needed dose of sunshine back into our lives.

The Avalanches have always looked to create something new out of something old, and their latest effort shows more of that same unique invention we are starstruck with. A beautifully bright and uplifting record that cements them as true innovators on the scene once again.
