Biffy Clyro - ‘Ellipsis’

5/10

While Biffy Clyro's sound can be split into two easy to understand parts; pre-'Puzzle' and post-'Puzzle', this album obviously matches the pattern of the latter and much like everything after their biggest commercial success, it has its moments but on the whole, doesn't really excite like they used to.

It feels like this album may already become just another overlooked release like their 2013 album 'Opposites', a record that most had forgotten about in the lead up to this full-length. While it has its moments of riff-tastic epicness, the majority of the album seems to focus on the mediocre swan-songs that earned them their commercial success. The result unfortunately is just a collection of lacklustre ballads and subdued power rock that rides the middle of the road like nothing else.

While longtime fans will look on in despair at the direction they took in the later years, this lack of inspiration is surely the point in which they might want to freshen themselves up once again. They've milked this cow to the bone and it just doesn't have the same effect anymore.
