Cage The Elephant - 'Neon Pill'

7/10

Ever since their breakthrough self-titled debut LP in 2008, Cage The Elephant have been one of the few indie-rock acts from the last decade to maintain quality and mass appeal. While the genre has certainly been popular this century, the US six-piece have managed to keep themselves afloat with a riveting array of releases that always deliver something new and interesting. And plenty of praise for their 2019 effort 'Social Cues', they return once again with their sixth studio album 'Neon Pill', a record that sees them enter a new phase within their sound.

While much of their earlier work was far more brash and anthemic, 'Neon Pill' sees them slip into a more refined and breezy direction. Creating these brilliantly warm and inviting soundscapes that still give them the opportunity to crack out the occasional killer riff from time to time, their latest endeavour feels far more matured and confident throughout, finding them in a rich and dynamic guise this time around.

It may not have the same instant impact as their formative material, but 'Neon Pill' still manages to pack itself with plenty of surprises from beginning to end. Now more than fifteen years since they first arrived, they are still uncovering plenty of innovative ideas to explore once again.
