Chairlift - 'Moth'

7/10

Having been a staple of the underground electro pop scene for almost a decade now, New York's Chairlift are entering the big time with their first studio album on a major label. 'Moth' is the pair's first full-length since signing to Columbia and is actually their first studio release in almost exactly four years. In that time, they have grown exponentially as artists and have returned with an incredibly catchy new record.

From the start, 'Moth' shows itself as a punchy and likeable release. The glossy pop sound, mixed with an experimental ethos, not only gives the pair their distinctive style but also helps them stand out at a time of great imitators. What this album has that some of their previous ones left out, was a connection with traditional instrumentation as oppose to their electronic dependancies. Throwing in waves of brass and strings throughout the record makes it seem a lot larger than the two musicians at the centre, and gives it a whole new feel and sensation throughout.

Chairlift are certainly no strangers to creating sensational pop music and this album could be their best to date. While it steps away from their back catalogue at times, it does show great growth and could well be the start of another chapter in their career.
