Danny Goffey - 'Schtick!'

7/10

Since Supergrass decided to call an end to their illustrious career back in 2010, frontman Gas Coombes has managed to reinvent himself as a forward-thinking frontman in a music market that seems to be swelling with his kind of late. But drummer Danny Goffey has been keeping his options open regarding the next phase of his career. Collaborating with the likes of Paul McCartney, Paul Weller, Thom Yorke and many others, the stick-master now returns with his first solo album under his own name and aims to return to the fun days of Britpop in the process.

From the start, 'Schtick!' has this strong retrospective presence that seems keen on delivering a more toe-tapping release than most would have expected. While nearly every other former Britpop musician turned solo artist is more about the sombre, thought-provoking direction, Goffey is still very much feeling the corona of energy from those days. But just like any good upbeat record, there is still plenty to unpack within the lyrical content, as the frontman takes on the more contemporary problems of the new age with tracks highlighting mental health and political unrest, just much as he sings about going out with your mates.

There is something very nostalgic about 'Schtick!', probably because when you mention Supergrass in the context of this release, it makes a lot of sense. The album has this incredibly joyful attitude to it and it almost takes you back to the simpler times when the band were shouting about how everything was alright. Either way, Goffey's personality on this record is simply infectious and will guarantee to brighten your day, no matter the weather.
