Daughter - 'Music From Before The Storm'

8/10

Throughout their career so far, indie-poppers Daughter have been a strong and reliable source of fantastic, well-structured music. Their first two albums 'If You Leave' and 'Not To Disappear' have proven not only to be commercially successful, but show solid growth in a band looking to form new horizons. Which is probably why they have taken on the challenge to produce the soundtrack to video game 'Life Is Strange: Before The Storm', a release that shows a very different tone to their normal output.

While their work to date has mainly occupied a few niche concept of lo-fi indie-pop with the occasional synth influence, 'Music From Before The Storm' sees them take on a more atmospheric intention. Creating huge and sometimes anthemic soundscapes within the record, Daughter have morphed themselves perfectly into a group that can produce bold and interesting music that always knows its place and very rarely tries to see itself as the focus of your attention.

I think it needs to be said that this is obviously an album that has been recorded for the purpose of another medium, and therefore isn't designed to be solely listened to without context. But even so, you can hear so much detail within their work, making this more than just a background soundtrack and something that really stands out on its own as well.
