Deerhoof - 'Future Teenage Cave Artists'

7/10

Since first emerging back in the mid 90s, Californian outfit Deerhoof have never looked to emulate or take inspiration from other artists around them. Instead they look to wider stimuli throughout the world in order to create their bold and abstract direction, which may explain why so much of their music in the last few years has seen them branch out into far more unusual and unexplained aesthetics. But while their output has been harder to get your head around of late, they are still able to fascinate us with everything they do as they return with their fifteenth full-length 'Future Teenage Cave Artists'.

Opening up with the record's bizarre and unconventional title-track, this first single certainly gets you ready for the wild and warped journey you are about to experience. With its blisteringly screeching guitars and eerie dual vocal harmonies, 'Future Teenage Cave Artists' is one of those releases that could sound truly awful if it came from an act that was less experienced in crafting a sound like this one. But with their solid and driven pace running the length of this 40-minute new collection, Deerhoof manage to once again deliver something with more bite than you would have expected when you first switch onto it.

Diverse and experimental throughout, 'Future Teenage Cave Artists' shows that after a twenty-five year history of releasing music, they are far from out of fresh ideas. It may confuse and bewilder you at times, but once you are used to that, there remain plenty of wonderfully genius moments throughout this distinctly bonkers new offering.
