Disclosure - 'Energy'

7/10

Since the release of their brilliant debut album 'Settle' back in 2013, Disclosure have firmly found themselves a home as one of the most praised and in-demand dance acts on the planet right now. Blending classic 2-step and garage influences with a contemporary flair, they were quickly established as the future of British dance music. And although their follow-up 'Caracal' in 2015 divided opinion with its slower and more atmospheric direction, the pair have spent the last few years releasing a wave of club-ready bangers, and now look to continue that vibrant form with their third full-length 'Energy'.

From the preview singles we heard off this record, it was clear that the name of this album was an indication of a return to their more boisterous and fast-paced aesthetic. And while they are now collaborating with the likes of Kelis, slowthai, and Common on this new collection, they have not lost the focus that came with those early days when they were just wee teenagers emerging on the scene. Although not every single hits as hard as they could, there are plenty of moments on here that see Disclosure deliver something truly special and engaging, giving this release a revived feel in their catalogue so far.

From the very start, 'Energy' looks to see Disclosure play it safe but with a strong dose of musical curiosity throughout. In a sense, it is more of that signature sound that we frankly can't get enough of still, but with such a wide and diverse use of instrumentation here, it feels like they becoming more fascinated with creating captivating productions that will suit home listening just as much as midnight raves.
