Everything Everything - 'Re-Animator'

7/10

Since their infancy, Everything Everything have been one of the most unique and captivating outfits working today. With a sound that is instantly recognisable and a flurry of highly-praised offerings under their belt over the last decade, the group are almost unmatched in their pursuit of diverse and interesting directions. But after a number of years of focusing more on the more solemn and downtrodden sides of everyday life, the group chose to make their fifth full-length a more positive affair as 'Re-Animator' sees them explore more euphoric and uplifting intentions.

Although it seems like a well-timed shift in perspective, given the state of the world in 2020, Everything Everything took this decision long before pandemics and wildfires were all we saw in the news, showing that this is certainly set to be more of a longterm decision. But while the music is less forlorn and more glittering throughout, it does seem to lose some of the bite we have become so used to from this innovative group. While it is clear that the band are having their 'In Rainbows' moment with this record, there just seems to be something missing here; namely their more bombastic side that has given them so much acclaim over the years.

While it is still a beautiful and well-constructed record, 'Re-Animator' feels like a whole new group at its helm. The drama and intensity has been swapped out for more warm and heartfelt aesthetics that while adding some incredibly inviting quivers to their bow, does lack some of that bold and vibrant style we are all so used to by now.
