Getting To Know... Elkvilla

Following on from a string of smooth and seductive singles including 'Sink' and 'The Cold Will Keep You Here' in the last year, Berlin-based singer and songwriter Adam Dudek has now returned to his dreamy and ambient ways as he unveils his latest offering 'Hunting'.

Self-produced and mixed by the frontman himself, 'Hunting' sets the artist as one of the richer and more textured acoustic-based artists working today. Following in the footsteps of the likes of Conor Oberst and The Tallest Man On Earth, his latest delivery is a wonderfully warm and atmospheric delight that oozes raw passion and emotion.

So with his new song galloping along the hype machine of late, we sat down with him to find out more about his earliest beginnings and what led to the path he is now pursuing.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The electric guitar - but I was always too afraid to learn as I thought it looked super complicated with all those cables and amps. It seems funny now but at the age of 13 I thought it was already too late to start learning but I had a friend from school though who had just started learning and I realised it wasn’t as complicated as it looked and I gave it a shot.

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

I would say it is my love of recording sounds - as I have more of an audio engineering background, so I like to spend most of my time reading about new pieces of gear and just love messing with sounds. These days a lot of my heroes are the music producers like Andrew Scheps, Ken Thomas and Mike Crossey. As far as the sound of my music; I'm really just inspired by melancholic and slow sounding songs with plenty of ambience and mood.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

Bands and songwriters like Death cab for cutie, Elliott Smith, Sigur Rós and Muse. For more electronic artists : Boards of Canada, Dntel and Baths.

When you wake up in the morning, what kind of music do you like to listen to?

Over the past year Julien Baker, (She is an absolutely amazing songwriter, guitar player and producer) Big Thief & Hania Rani. Admittedly I don't listen to as much music as I should, especially when I’m in the middle of recording songs. Hearing new music is awesome but can sometimes be a little distracting to stuff you are currently trying to work and focus on. So in between the EP recording I have been listening to a lot of podcasts that my bass player Valgeir introduced me such as 'Reply All', which I have been binge-listening during this quarantine.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

There are some songs which are about people in my life, some can be specific or a mixture of things. My last song 'Hunting' talks about being young and the boredom and frustrations of going out to the city and clubs.

What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?

Elkvilla’s one year old now and started with a couple of songs I recorded in my apartment alone. So I'm having a lot of fun bringing it to a live setting with some amazing musicians.
