Getting To Know... Housewife

Following on from her much-loved offerings 'Wasn't You' and 'I Lied' earlier this year, Toronto-based artist Housewife is back once again to deliver her shimmering new single 'Life Of The Party'.

Exploring a darker edge to her more familiar indie-pop aesthetics, 'Life Of The Party' makes for a wonderfully bold and riveting listen. With her soaring vocals layered across an immersive production throughout, she is continuing to cement herself as one of the more exciting names doing the rounds right now.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with her to find out more about her origins and what has been inspiring her most recently.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The first instrument I fell in love with in the abstract was violin. I became obsessed with violins at the age of two and didn’t stop asking for lessons until my parents gave in when I was four. The first actual physical instrument I fell in love with was my Gretsch Electromatic. I saw it in a guitar store when I was eleven and saved up for a whole year to get it.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

My whole life I’ve never really been the kind of person to only listen to one type of music- I literally listen to every type of music under the sun! But I did especially love Baroque music and old school folk like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young when I was younger.

What was the first album you remember owning?

I don’t actually remember but I’m pretty sure it was a Joel Plaskett cd! I went to a lot of folk festivals with my parents as a kid and we would always go to the merch tent at the end of the festival and pick out CDs.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Casual by Chappel Roan. Or any song by Chappell Roan really.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Yes! When I’m starting a new project or writing trip I like to buy a fun notebook- something fuzzy or with sequins. It helps take the seriousness out of it.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I’ve really been enjoying Nemahsis’ new album, as well as the new Childish Gambino album. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Massive Attack recently. And of course the new Sabrina Carpenter album and Chappell Roan.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

I’d hate to answer a third question with Chappell Roan, but Chappell Roan. I’d also really love to open for Blondshell, and of course one of my fav bands of all time Metric. I got to play the same festival as them last summer which was really cool.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

I love getting to play music with my friends! There is such a wonderful energy when everything just clicks on stage- it feels magic. I also really love all the amazing shows I get to catch when opening for other artists or playing at festivals.

And what is the most frustrating part?

I mean I absolutely love my job but there are definitely a lot of frustrating parts! I’m not good at social media- I don’t like sharing that much of my life online so that can be tough. We’re also well into week three of tour and I really am missing consistent laundry and having a room to myself!

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

I feel like I should definitely have a good answer to this, but to be honest I’ve been given so much good advice by so many amazing musicians that it’s hard to whittle down to one big thing. I’ve been super lucky to have tons of amazing help and mentorship in the past like ten ish years of doing music. I guess that is advice in itself though- never be afraid to ask for help, and building community is so important!
