Getting To Know... Moonroof

Following on from a string of highly-praised singles such as 'Trojans', 'Home Alone' and 'Be Somebody' in the last year, Philadelphia-based indie-pop outfit Moonroof have now returned to deliver their latest uplifting offering 'Magazine'.

Taking their cues from other euphoric groups such as The 1975 and Two Door Cinema Club, this bright and upbeat new delight is surely one that can bring even the darkest minds out into the light right now.

So with the group back on the new music run, we had a chat with lead singer Dave Kim to find out more about their influences and what got them to this point.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The first instrument I fell in love with was the clarinet. I played it since I was 8 years old and that helped me get into music to be honest.

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

The most prominent inspiration has been bands like 1975 and Two Door Cinema Club. I love their sound and the lead singers of the band show so much class and social influence to the world.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

I didnt listen to much music as a teenager, the first bands that I got into was The Fray, The Script, and Yellow Card. I honestly never thought being in a band was an option in my life.

Can you remember the first song that made you want to pursue a life in music?

The first song that made me realise I wanted to pursue music was 1975's song Chocolate. Something about it made me feel the importance of music.

When you wake up in the morning, what kind of music do you like to listen to?

When I wake up to get me my energy I usually listen to Rap like Lil Uzi Vert, Chilidish Gambino, and Da Baby. It makes me wake up and want to do something!

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

Honestly alot of our songs are about the people I've encouted wether it was a relationship or someone I just met. These songs are stories on situations I personally endured which is amazing to share to others.

 

What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?

The best thing that has happend to us as a band is opening for Bands like The Lumineers, Death Cab for Cutie and Grouplove. We peformed at the BB&T Center in Candem infront of thousands, which is a day we will never forget.

 

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

Honestly If I wasnt a musician I would try to be a food enthusiast. Try to be the next Man vs Food or something like that. Im happy I found music cause it made me into a hard working person who tries to show passion.

And what advice would you give to those looking to start a career in music?

If you want to do music , take the little wins and enjoy it. Not many are over night successes, so go do what you can each time. Always try to improve on your work. Im still trying to figure a lot in my life so keep moving forward with all your heart.
