What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
CJ: A busted up guitar from the antique shop.
Dre: The instrument I fell in love with and picked up first was the drums when I was around 8 or 9 years old.
rikki: Piano
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
CJ: I liked my parents 60s and 70s CDs.
Dre: Growing up, I mostly gravitated to stuff my parents were listening to. My mother listened to things like Alicia Keys, Tanya Stephens, Mary J Blige, Busta Rhymes and Bob Marley. My dad was heavily into Hard Rock and Punk.
rikki: Electronic or rock music.
What was the first album you remember owning?
CJ: I was given a Demon Days CD by Gorillaz.
Dre: The first album I bought with my own allowance (on February 20th 2010) was Metallica’s Ride the Lightning. Before that I had CD that were handed down to me like Gorillaz, Cypress Hill and a German band called Die Toten Hosen.
rikki: Demon Days by Gorillaz and Meteora by Linkin Park.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
CJ: Sky High by Jigsaw, such a cool song.
Dre: There’s a dozen of songs I wish I came up with. I’ll go with Bourrée in Em by Bach.
rikki: Maniac by Michael sambello
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
CJ: For this song we only wrote and recorded between midnight till 2.00AM then we finished and brought it to the studio.
Dre: Not really. I just pick up my instrument and see what happens.
rikki: Start sober.. Or Let the journey take me instead of plan out a song.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
CJ: Favourites: Sixto Rodriguez, Jim Croce, Led Zeppelin. Currently listening to: Chicago, Tom Jones and Nina Simone, listen to these a lot anyway.
Dre: I always enjoy listen to bands like Carcass, Title Fight, Napalm Death, The Smiths, Scab, Macabre, Men I Trust, Samhain, Alton Ellis, Bob & Gene. The list is endless but those are the musicians I usually come back to.
rikki: Tatsuro yamashita, doors, supertramp.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
CJ: Yes (the band)
Dre: Opening and hanging out with Thundercat would definitely be memorable.
rikki: Gotillaz
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
CJ: On the whole it’s not really haha, but for me it’s a personal relationship between me and the song, so sometimes it’s rewarding hearing something I think is good that I made, until I change my mind and decide I hate it.
Dre: For me personally, just being able to be surrounded by music. Whether it’s playing or listening, I find that music has a healing component to it. Music has constantly been in my life regardless of my physical or mental state.
rikki: When the creative process flows. Or when you show someone a new song and they die.
And what is the most frustrating part?
CJ: Not getting to do it enough and grappling with your own songwriting.
Dre: Maybe it’s not getting an idea down like you would expect it to or not feeling inspired enough but to me, the positives outweigh the negatives.
rikki: Having to market music instead of making and performing it.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
CJ: Give yourself obstacles.
Dre: "Have fun"
rikki: Less is more.
