Getting To Know... Senator

Having spent the last few months releasing a wave of fresh and exhilarating indie-pop delights, US-based outfit Senator now return to deliver their highly-anticipated debut EP 'Getting Warmer'.

With nods to the likes of Men I Trust, TOPS, and Real Estate with their light and breezy aesthetic, 'Getting Warmer' makes for a fun and uplifting introduction to the duo. Filled with warming textures, sweeping melodies, and some seriously woozy vibes, this new collection cements them as a true talent to keep a firm eye on in the months ahead.

So with their new EP available now, we sat down with them to find out more about their background and what has inspired them most over the years.

What were the first instruments you fell in love with?

Gary started out playing drums in his dads footsteps and really enjoyed that but when he started playing guitar was when he really fell in love with writing music, and Josh has always loved playing guitar but also really enjoys the simplicity of playing bass.

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

We really draw inspiration from each other to be honest, sometimes I’ll lay down a rhythm guitar progression and Josh knows exactly what to do already, other times we may start it with a simple drum beat that we liked from another song we listened to and build off that.

What kind of music did you love as teenagers?

We both went through a wide array of musical phases through our teens, we listened to a lot Explosions in the Sky, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Portugal the Man, The Cure and a bunch of other stuff.

Can you remember the first song that made you want to pursue a life in music?

Not really but the first song we ever played together was the most god awful rendition of Blitzkreig Bop by The Ramones, and let me tell you... it was bad.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

We both listen to A LOT of Mac Demarco, and I ( Gary ) have recently been stuck on TOPS and M.A.G.S. as well.

How many of your songs have you written about people you’d rather forget?

Surprisingly not very many, but there are definitely couple. Most of them never made it out to the public though. Which is probably best haha!

What has been the most unusual moment in your career so far?

Probably the fact that before this EP we were making absolutely terrible music (under a different name), but it’s almost like something just clicked for us and we knew what we were doing wrong for all of these years.

Outside of music, what are your biggest passions?

We both used to skateboard a lot when we were younger but now we both have two kids so it’s pretty much work, family time, and music.

If you weren’t musicians, what other path do you think you might have taken?

Go to college and do something that makes us a lot more money haha. I’ve always been really interested in filmmaking though, maybe that.

And what advice would you give to other musicians looking to start a career in music?

Just keep at it, it’s not going to come fast, and even when you think you have something really good going, chances are your going to hate it in like two weeks. But really just never stop challenging yourself, build your own sound off your influences and do something to make yourself stand out.
