Getting To Know... Solarrio

Having started his career by working with some of the biggest artists in Germany’s hip-hop scene, French producer David Barenboim aka Solarrio has now been making waves as a solo artist in his own right as he returns with the bright and breezy new offering 'Real Love'.

Combining his love of 80's synth-pop with modern rhythms and his distinct voice, 'Real Love' makes for a wonderfully chilled and relaxing listen. Filled with sweeping guitar hooks, driven beats, and his own soulful vocal performance, his newest release looks to see him shine even brighter in his solo guise.

So with his new single on repeat for us right now, we sat down with him to find out more about his background and what has inspired him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The first instrument I learned was the piano, which is a great instrument to start with and learn the basics of music theory but the first instrument I fell in love with was the electric guitar. My whole family are classical musicians so I guess the guitar represented some kind of rebellion to me at a young age.

What has been the most prominent inspiration behind your music so far?

My biggest inspiration comes from life and personal relationships. That’s what most of my songs are about. However, sonically, I’ve always looked up to people that went against the grain and did their own thing, which is difficult nowadays because everyone seems to be following the same formula. Some of my biggest inspirations were Curtis Mayfield, Genesis, Nile Rodgers, Dr Dre, RZA, Timbaland to name a few.

What kind of music did you love as a teenager?

As a teenager I was equally obsessed with hip-hop/RNB and punk rock. I played in a few bands and started making beats when I was about 14/15.

Can you remember the first song that made you want to pursue a life in music?

I think the first CD I bought myself was Genesis 'We Can’t Dance'. I always thought I would pursue a life in music because of my family but I had to figure out my own style/direction. Green Day’s 'Dookie' made me want to be a punk rock guitarist and Raekwon’s 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx' made me want to make beats.

When you wake up in the morning, what kind of music do you like to listen to?

Usually whatever I was working on the night before. If not, probably some 70s/80s RNB, something smooth, I’m not a morning person so I need something to get my mind right.

How many of your songs have you written about people in your life?

I’d say 90% of my songs are about people in my life, myself or certain experiences. I use my music as therapy, so I always try to write about whatever I’m going through.

What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?

My latest song 'Real Love' because I finally got to do something with my father who played piano it. Our worlds feel so different, I’m glad I got to bring him into mine for a little bit.

Outside of music, what is your biggest passion?

Dogs. I love dogs more than humans.

If you weren’t a musician, what other path do you think you might have taken?

I would still have tried to find something in the music business or something involving music. That’s what I do and understand best.

And what advice would you give to other musicians looking to start a career in music?

I’d say make sure you’re passionate about your craft. It’s not easy, you have to be patient and really love what you do, because there will be a lot of disappointments.
