GIRLI - 'Odd One Out'

7/10

Ever since we first heard her 2017 EP 'Hot Mess', we just knew that Milly Toomey aka GIRLI was going to grow into something very special. With her brash and punk-esque attitude wrapped over layers of harsh electronics, her sound is a vital and volatile shot to the arm that we are all looking for. And after a couple of years to ready herself, she has now delivered her highly-anticipated debut album 'Odd One Out', a record that self-describes the frontwoman's own unique approach to introduce herself to the mainstream pop scene.

With obvious influences from the likes of Peaches and Charli XCX running throughout this new collection, 'Odd One Out' looks to sit somewhere in the middle of a commercially accessible sound and something far more out there at the same time. While it's opening singles 'Deal With It' and 'Pink' give that familiar alternative electro-pop narrative, we get to hear the true GIRLI on tracks like 'Day Month Second' and the previously released 'Hot Mess' in delivering this blistering and uncompromising sound that truly helps her stand out from the other bratty electro-pop artists of the moment.

While there are moments where we feel like she could have developed more of a deeper aesthetic on the production of this release, there are plenty of times where her basic approach to its recording plays right into her hands, giving her performance a very centralised appearance. Fun and exciting throughout, 'Odd One Out' certainly brings a new angle to the teenage angst direction she has always been peddling.
