Girlpool - 'What Chaos Is Imaginary'

7/10

Since their beginnings, the sound of Girlpool has been fairly fixed in the world of alternative dream-pop. With their first two albums 'Before The World Was Big' and 'Powerplant' sticking firmly to the script of their core sound, it seems that something has sparked an adventure into the unknown for LP number three, as the pair look to expand beyond their chosen direction when conceiving 'What Chaos Is Imaginary', which now sits as their most diverse and evolved release to date.

Rather than simply continuing on where 'Powerplant' left off, the duo have looked to take their signature woozy style through a variety of indie-rock guises, aiding in giving this collection a far more eclectic feel. While sticking firmly to their short and sharp formula of writing, the band now looks to spread its creative wings when it comes to sound. Adopting a production style that likes to keep the listener on their toes, they have managed to create a record that never tries to be too much of the same thing at once, flipping back and forth between intentions and ultimately giving the release a far more flexible pace.

While this new direction does fall flat in part, the majority of this new album feels fresh in light of where they were previously. With a strong consensus to drive themselves forward, 'What Chaos Is Imaginary' will sit as the beginning of a whole new Girlpool, and hopefully see them display even more confidence in the future.
