Glassjaw- 'Material Control'

8/10

While we knew that post-hardcore veterans Glassjaw would be releasing a new album in the near future, absolutely no-one was expecting it to come right out of the blue and land on our laps so quickly. While the band have been releasing the odd single and EP over the last few years, 'Material Control' marks their first full-length release since 2002's 'Worship & Tribute', and sees them return with all the gusto and ferocity we would have expected.

Despite being an obviously heavy and tenacious sound, the real focus of this release lies with frontman Daryl Palumbo, whose harmonious singing acts as a real juxtaposition to the sound of the record. Keeping his screaming to a minimum has aided the overall tone of this comeback, showing that not only are Glassjaw still a relevant outfit but are also capable of developing new ideas and sounds that keep them worlds apart from the everyday riffraff of the hardcore scene.

'Material Control' is one of those comeback records that seem to be more than just an appeasement for their fanbase. With a slight change in direction, they seem to be keen on impressing the next generation of fans with a more contemporary direction and accomplished songwriting, which would suggest that this is no one-off return.
