Ibibio Sound Machine - 'Eyio'

8/10

Following on from their incredible and much-loved sophomore album 'Uyai' last year, the London-based eight-piece Ibibio Sound Machine return with their distinctive afrobeat-meets-electro-disco sound for a new four track release of singles we assume did not quite make it onto their latest full-length release.

For those that haven't heard of them, this new release makes for a good introduction as to who they are and what they represent. From the high-percussive sound of opener 'Heart Beats Like A Drum' to the far more mellow and afro-traditional vibe of 'Uyai', this new EP aims to display the multifaceted sound of the group and highlight some of their more lo-fi releases, ones that are less embroiled in the large production values of their studio albums.

For fans of the group, this is a wonderful treat to carry them over from their last studio album. A small, tightly-formed release with all those great Ibibio trademarks of smooth grooves combined with an eccentric flair. A great band whose smaller releases still manage to make a large impact.
