Jade Bird - 'Jade Bird'

7/10

Having been one of the fastest rising stars on the singer-songwriter scene for more than two years now, Jade Bird's self-titled debut album has been one of the most hotly-anticipated new releases for this year so far. With a flurry of hit singles arriving in the preceding months, the London-based frontwoman is looking to become the next darling of this country's solo singer scene, which may come as some surprise as it seems clear that she prefers the sound of American soul to our own.

While she is a hardened woman of the British Isles, 'Jade Bird' is filled with the country-esque twinge of US Americana, giving her first release a refreshingly different atmosphere. Tracks like 'I Get No Joy' and 'Love Has All Been Done Before'' have forged the frontwoman's signature sound, and go a long way in making this new full-length far more engaging than your average debut LP. But despite her style of playing and writing being so well cemented at such an early stage, there are more times than one that feels like she isn't a fully realised songwriter just yet, and moments on this new record feel rather underwhelming when compared to its highlights.

Yet despite the odd blip, Jade Bird has still managed to deliver a strong and stable debut album that will no doubt keep her hordes of fans extremely happy. She may have a while to go before she really begins to stand out but, but this initial release gives great promise to the young frontwoman.
