Jayda G - 'Significant Changes'

8/10

Having moved herself from her hometown of Vancouver to Berlin in 2016 to focus on her DJ career, the young Jayda G was still largely considered an outsider in the scene. Mostly playing to a mix of crowds in both size and interests, the producer quickly established that focusing herself onto one particular direction just wasn't going to work when it came to creating your own live material. So as she now delivers her debut album 'Significant Changes', we are treated to a diverse and eclectic collection of ideas that have quickly become a seminal part of the beatmaker's overall sound.

Mixing it waves of an ethereal trip-hop-inspired backdrop with elements of disco, house and techno were the noticeable points of intrigue when we first heard the initial singles from this release, and on the new record, they are clearly the hallmarks of her sound. Jayda's own experimental nature seems to be the driving force behind this new release, creating a lucid and varied record in the process. Yet while her intentions lay largely in the atmospheric musical realm, there are plenty of moments on the album where we hear her more upbeat side, looking to create uplifting path from time to time.

Overall, Jayda G makes a strong and charismatic introduction to herself here. With a solid production and intention throughout, 'Significant Changes' has that rare appeal where it can be enjoyed in the club just as much as at home. She may have been inspired by the dance scene in Berlin, but this new release has an undeniable international appeal.
