Jim James - 'Tribute To Vol. 2'

7/10

Despite still being firmly a part of his regular outfit My Morning Jacket, frontman Jim James hasn't let his solo ambitions fall aside just yet. The singer-songwriter returned to his one-man project last year to release his latest album 'Eternally Even', and is now unveiling the sequel to his 2009 EP 'Tribute To'. But while 'Tribute To' was mainly a homage to George Harrison and Bob Dylan, 'Tribute To Vol. 2' sees him cover a whole range of artists that have influenced him over the years.

Opening up with The Beach Boys' classic 'I Just Wasn't Made For These Days', the album unfurls into one laid-back serenade after the next. The idea of this new collection of tracks seems to be a way for James to both highlight the personal influences these artists have made on his career, but also let his fanbase see exactly where he gets his inspiration from and deliver something that isn't too far removed from his own musical direction.

While the style of production does shift from one track to the next, the general vibe and flow of this release is incredibly succinct. This just shows how embedded his personal style is within this music, and gives us a real insight into the personal jukebox of this great frontman.
