John Legend - 'Darkness And Light'

7/10

It has always bemused me as to why John Legend hasn't taken off as well in the UK as he has done in his native United States. For all his talent and excellent songwriting, the man should be a global sensation but is really seen as more of a cult favourite over here. Nevertheless, the charismatic piano-player has returned to deliver his fifth studio album 'Darkness And Light', and much like his previous release 'Love In The Future', has brought along a smattering of contemporary names to add a sense of camaraderie on his latest work.

Since Legend released the collaboration album 'Wake Up!' alongside The Roots in 2010, he has found himself working with many other artists over the last few years, that has led his own material to have a far more eclectic feel. Chance The Rapper makes an appearance on the stand-out track 'Penthouse Floor', a single that best sums up the energy of this new release. While he best known for his ballads, 'Darkness And Light' is a far more upbeat release with many nods to the funk and soul eras.

While the record's title does lead you to believe there is dual side to the album's content, the reality is that it shines far more light than any plunging darkness. It has this fresh and fulfilling atmosphere running through it, creating a smooth and pleasant journey throughout.
