King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard - 'Flying Microtonal Banana'

7/10

If there were any band entitled to the honour of "world's least conforming band", King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard would be the sure-fire winner. The Australian psych-rock band have averaged about two albums a year since their formation, and we now kick off their 2017 with the first of a supposed five albums from the group throughout the year. Yet despite their prolific output, we have yet to hear a decline in quality, and the same can be said for this latest full-length.

With a mix of power-rock anthems and their more familiar psychedelic sound, 'Flying Microtonal Banana' seems to have sent the band down the path of a more commercial release. No doubt the band has recognised the huge momentum behind them during last year's campaigns, and this record sees them take on a more accessible angle. Rather than opting for a lucid, dream-like release, there is far more attention given to catchy riffs and euphoric introductions, all designed to draw you in.

Despite it easily being their most engaging album to date, it has managed to lose that sense of oneness that their last few records delivered on so well. Less of a cohesive album this time, but still jam packed with some absolute belters.
