King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - 'K.G.'

7/10

Since their earliest beginnings, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have been one of the most proficient and productive outfits in the world. Regularly knocking out more than one studio album every year, their ability to create bold and vivid psych-rock works is only matched by the sheer speed in which they are able to roll it out. But after a short departure from their signature sound last year, releasing 'Fishing For Fishies' and 'Infest The Rats' Nest', a glam-rock and heavy metal album respectively, they are back to their formative roots on 'K.G.', a record that looks to see them move back to familiar ground.

In a way, this feels more like a natural continuation of their 2017 LP 'Flying Microtonal Banana', a release that is still considered one of their best and more in line with what we expect from the Aussie outfit. But although their abstract adventures into unknown territory have become a staple in recent years, seeing them return to these safer avenues still manages to pack in plenty of surprises. Less of the big hooks and more of the atmospheric intentions, 'K.G.' is one of their more traditional and stable collections, offering fans a taste of what they love before they inevitable venture into something daring in the near future.

It may not be their most inventive of returns, but 'K.G.' is still a wonderfully warm and inviting listen throughout. Packed full with plenty of obvious King Gizzard tropes, this new full-length sees them comeback with consistency and drive, something that all of their fans will appreciate and applaud.
