Liam Gallagher - 'Why Me? Why Not'

6/10

When Liam Gallagher first announced his plans for a solo album in 2016, his debut effort 'As You Were' saw him attempt to continue the sound that Oasis had gifted him with all those years ago. Although a crowd-pleasing decision no doubt, the result had a rather dated feel to it that saw him trying to reclaim his successful past rather than take on anything new. But while he sometimes seems reluctant to change in any way, 'Why Me? Why Not' sees him pursue a whole range of new ideas, giving this return a more diverse and exploratory feel than its predecessor.

Opening up with the rather Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-inspired 'Shockwave', this new collection is all about reintroducing Liam Gallagher to his fans as a frontman who isn't afraid to embark on new and creative journeys. As a result, we see him bring in a wider range of instrumentation this time around in order to deliver a record that portrays the new and adventurous songwriter. Although with many albums that move their sound around too much, pace and flow can sometimes become an issue and this also seems the case on 'Why Me? Why Not', which sometimes struggles with a lack of identity as he looks for something new to call his own.

In all, 'Why Me? Why Not' is a stronger return than his debut release but one that could have done with a more fixed and purposeful direction. The tracks have all been produced to exquisite quality, but just as it gets going, it is suddenly dragged back down again, making it a hard record to get through without skipping throughout.
