Lion Babe - 'Cosmic Wind'

6/10

In the build-up to their much-loved debut album 'Begin' back in 2016, Lion Babe were being pitched as the next big thing in the growing future-RnB sound of the time. And while that record had plenty of exciting and innovative moments on it, it failed to make much of a commercial impact, despite how enjoyable it was. Now split from their contract with Interscope Records, the duo have chosen to self-release their follow-up and while the freedom to truly express themselves is evident throughout this new release, we are now getting to hear what direction the pair are more interested in pursuing.

While 'Begin' was filled with an eccentric and groundbreaking aesthetic, 'Cosmic Wind' very much feels like a back to basics approach for the pair. Lacking the unusual electronics, this new album sees frontwoman Jillian Hervey serenade us in a far more intimate and impassioned style. Feeling much more connected to the classic sounds of Lauryn Hill and The Fugees, this new batch of singles sees them in a far more comfortable light, not really looking to break any new boundaries with their sound but instead focus on simple and elegant songwriting instead.

And while they are more at home on here, 'Cosmic Wind' does suffer from being just another RnB record. Without the flair and energetic flow, this new record falls into a very forgettable trap, despite how pleasant it is to hear. A confident return but one that isn't going to wow many at the same time.
