The Lost Letters - 'The Lost Letters'

8/10

Despite creating music together as far back as 2018, the Taiwanese duo of musician and scholar Ben J Heal and folk singer Fulya have kept their Lost Letters project largely confined to themselves and a number of intimate live performances over the years. Spending the bulk of that time revising and cultivating a unique direction in which to call their own, the pair are now ready to release themselves onto the wider world with their captivating self-titled debut album, a record that perfectly captures their immersive aesthetic throughout.

While very much akin to the electronic folk sound within their material, there are plenty of moments throughout this new collection that sees them broaden their musical horizons into a more varied appeal. Creating these beautifully rich and sprawling soundscapes that all seem so incredibly delicate and fragile as they play, 'The Lost Letters' introduces them to the fold with this brilliantly riveting texture, exploring a multitude of diverse tones and genres as often as possible.

They may have only released the one full-length to date, but 'The Lost Letters' already has so much innovative spirit packed into its humble seven-track runtime. Developing this wonderfully explorative nature that builds and swells in the most subtle way, these two have not only turned out an incredibly alluring listen, but established themselves as one of the rare hidden gems on today's new music scene.
