Loving Backwards - 'Rubbish Twilights'

8/10

Ever since they first emerged, German outfit Loving Backwards have looked to add a more rustic feel to the modern psych-rock movement. Blending this heady mix of tranquil indie-folk textures with a broader psychedelic edge has given them a wonderfully inventive sound that has already seen them gather plenty of praise and acclaim over the years. And with their presence continuing to grow, both at home and overseas, they look to cement this era within their direction with their eagerly-awaited debut album 'Rubbish Twilights', a record that heightens those immersive tones throughout.

Right from the very start, 'Rubbish Twilights' seeks out a rich and atmospheric intent in which to take itself. Bringing back more of that riveting aesthetic the band have earned a strong reputation for over the years, this ten-track collection sees them push that adventurous spirit further than ever before. Keeping the production stripped-back and refined as often as possible, Loving Backwards deliver a wonderfully absorbing listen that conjures just as much intrigue for its softer moments as it does for the bigger ones. It is subtle ebb and flow of pace that gives the record its captivating appeal, something they have always sought to inject into their work over the years.

While their material to date has always had this unconventional approach to it, hearing 'Rubbish Twilights' perfectly illustrates what they have been looking to carve out for themselves over the years. Moving with this unpredictable groove from start to finish, their debut LP is compelling and alluring in equal measure, building upon those illustrious foundations they have been laying until now.
