Lucy Rose - 'No Words Left'

8/10

Ever since she first emerged with her debut album 'Like I Used To' back in 2012, singer-songwriter Lucy Rose has just gone from strength to strength with the quality of her songwriting. While the frontwoman has rarely been seen as one to evolve or break new moulds within her own direction, she has always looked to give a greater sense of grandeur to her very minimal sound, moving ever upwards in her own musical exploration. And that is precisely what we get on her fourth full-length 'No Words Left', a record takes the simplicity of her writing to far higher heights.

The consistency of her style over the years is something to be commended here. While other artists usually lose inspiration around this point and opt for a completely new intention, Lucy Rose manages to keep the creative juices flowing and grow into an even stronger frontwoman with every new release. Keeping the majority of this record stripped back to just a guitar or piano accompanying her voice, she is able to create an incredibly intimate release that breathes heart and emotion throughout, making for one of her more thought-provoking and engaging collections to date.

While she has always been known as a very humbling artist, there are moments on 'No Words Left' where we get to hear her voice soar over a subtle bed of instrumentation, something that she has rarely done before but only goes to showcase her incredible talent further. And wonderful return from one of the country's best singer-songwriters.
