Mary Middlefield – ‘Poetry (for the scorned and lonely)’

8/10

When Swiss singer-songwriter Mary Middlefield released her breakthrough debut album 'Thank You Alexander' last year, it was greeted as one of the fresher and more enigmatic of any new artist emerging that year. And while it has only been a few months since that LP, she has been quick to turn out a wealth of rich and captivating delights, all looking to push her sound further once again. And with the buzz beginning to build around her once again, she looks to double down on that illustrious praise she has been garnering with the arrival of her anthemic new EP ‘Poetry (for the scorned and lonely)’.

Featuring a flurry of previously unveiled efforts including 'Sexless', 'Atlantis', 'Heart's Desire' and 'Young And Dumb', this new collection finds her in a wonderfully rich and dynamic guise. Splitting the EP's aesthetic between bright and euphoric pop-rock belters and a more sombre approach from time to time, ‘Poetry (for the scorned and lonely)’ sees her build effortlessly upon the foundations of last year's initial full-length, and explore a multitude of diverse directions that elevate her spellbinding presence once again.

Things have certainly been extremely busy for her over this past year so, but ‘Poetry (for the scorned and lonely)’ still manages to cultivate new and interesting areas in which to take her wondrous style. Moving with this subtle elegance between each of the seven tracks, Mary Middlefield continues her ascent as a true innovator on the scene today.
