Middle Kids - 'Today We're The Greatest'

7/10

After releasing their much-loved debut album 'Lost Friends' in 2018, Australian pop-rock trio Middle Kids were keen to stamp their authority on the scene with their fresh and dynamic sound. The release gave the group a foundation of strong ideas that aided their ascent, but still felt like a driven direction hadn't fully been established yet. So after three years of working on themselves and wondering what to do next, they return with their eagerly-anticipated sophomore effort 'Today We're The Greatest', a record that conveys a far more confident and ambitious group at the helm.

From the very start, 'Today We're The Greatest' takes the knowledge and intension of their initial offering and looks to push it as far as it will go. This results in an incredibly well-honed collection that sees them explore a mix of broad and captivating dream-pop soundscapes, as well as more fast-paced and lively concepts. It feels like they have discovered what it takes to keep a full-length record engaging, and have looked to create a sonic journey that is both inviting and humbling, while not forgetting that sometimes we all need to let our hair down a little.

In all, 'Today We're The Greatest' still has some of the same identity problem we heard on 'Lost Friends', but also shows them in a far more comfortable light. They have this incredibly creative flair to their sound, delivering a release that showcases the best of their talents, while also trying new things at any given opportunity.
