Minor Victories - 'Minor Victories'

7/10

As far as supergroups go, Minor Victories is definitely one of the more intriguing. Featuring members of Mogwai, Editors and Slowdive, the band have an expected shoegaze-meets-post-punk feel about them, a direction that they seem extremely comfortable in.

Their self-titled debut album is certainly a well-rounded introduction to their sound. With Rachel Goswell's earthy vocals remaining a constant throughout this release, you definitely get a sense of cohesion from one track to the next. The record keeps this wonderfully well-balanced pace to it, mainly thanks to the epic production that it scattered amongst the material, allowing new life to occasionally be blown into it.

Its generally dark tones may not be to everyone's taste but if you are a fan of any of their main groups, then you'll definitely find something you like on here. These guys are specialists in brooding atmospheres and apocalyptic soundscapes, and that is just what you get on this record.
