Monster Florence - 'Master System'

7/10

When Essex-based outfit Monster Florence released their much-loved EP 'Cowboys & Idiots' back in 2020, it was clear that these guys were onto something very special. While focusing on a conventional hip-hop base throughout their material, they had tapped into something far more adventurous and distinctive than most, giving them this instantly identifiable sound that compared to nothing else on the scene. Now after a few years of touring around, they return with their eagerly-awaited new album 'Master System', a record that continues that innovative guise.

While much of the UK rap scene seems to pursue either a grime or drill-inspired direction, Monster Florence keep their options wide open throughout this new collection. From the very start, 'Master System' comes across an almost experimental release where production has this untethered freedom in which to explore. With each track becoming this island unto itself throughout, there are the occasional moments where their eclectic aesthetic branches a little too far from its core sound, but ultimately creates an incredibly cohesive and succinct listen from start to finish.

Monster Florence may not be the biggest name doing the rounds right now, but they have a solid and passionate sound that fits their inventive ideals. 'Master System' churns out plenty of fresh and exciting examples of their creative nature, brimming with captivating cuts and killer flows as often as possible.
