MUNA - 'MUNA'

8/10

Throughout their tenure, MUNA have positioned themselves as one of the more adventurous and euphoric names on the indie-pop roster. Originally pushing themselves out their with their breakthrough debut album 'About U' in 2017, the trio's reputation and standing grew to new heights when their sophomore collection 'Saves The World' established them as something more interesting and vibrant than many of their contemporaries at that time. And now as they deliver their self-titled third album, they are building yet another soaring array of power-pop efforts that shimmer throughout.

Probably sitting as their most commercially-accepting release to date, 'MUNA' is also their most confident work so far. They have never been ones to pigeonhole themselves into one particular direction, usually experimenting with aesthetics as often as possible, but for this new full-length we see them in their most adventurous spirits yet. While the opening Phoebe Bridgers collaboration 'Silk Chiffon' makes a solid introduction to their next phase, the LP quickly makes light work of their explorative attitude as they bounce back and forth between fist-pumping pop and more humbled and thought-provoking gems.

While fans of 'Saves The World' will have expected something more in that vein once again, there is something remarkably fresh and exciting about 'MUNA'. The three-piece have clearly been honing their sound since then and have returned with a bright and driven release that cuts fascinating tones at almost every turn.
