Neil Young - 'Peace Trail'

4/10

Over the last few years, legendary singer-soingwriter Neil Young has found himself at the heart of numerous collaborations. After recording much of his work with backing band Promise Of The Real and releasing a Jack Black-produced covers album 'A Letter Home' in 2014, Young has returned to his basic roots to deliver a politically charged new album, with mixed results.

While much of his recent work has been commendable, and even interesting to listen to, this new release seems to be lacking that same fire that we have seen throughout his career. While we can't ignore the fact that this is his 37th studio album, the 71-year-old Canadian has always used his prolific nature to his benefit. Producing and releasing music is in his blood, but just like any great artist, not all of it is a winner. 'Peace Trail' has attempted to rekindle his old flame but from listening now, it seems like that era of his life is over.

Its mild-mannered approach to blues not only seems out of place, it also lacks the emotion needed to really put the gusto into the songs he has written. Neil Young is and forever will be one of the world's greatest musicians, but if 'Peace Trail' were released by a new and emerging artist, it would be quickly ignored.
