NZCA LINES - 'Pure Luxury'

8/10

Since first introducing himself to the world with his self-titled debut album back in 2012, producer Michael Lovett aka NZCA LINES has always been one to add a much needed dose of flamboyance to the fledgling electro-pop world. Removing a lot of the seriousness than has begun to overwhelm the genre in recent years, he sits alongside the likes of Hot Chip and Passion Pit as one of the more adventurous names on the scene right now. And after an extended four year break between this and his sophomore full-length 'Infinite Summer', he is looking to make his third LP 'Pure Luxury' his most accessible to date.

While NZCA LINES was always a familiar name on festival line-ups and underground parties, he very rarely penetrated the musical zeitgeist at any point, but this new collection looks to change all that. While it still maintains plenty of that fresh and vibrant sound he has always produced, there is something far more poppier going throughout each track, showing us that while he want to focus on his core sound, he has done so through a more radio-friendly lens. But rather than completely sell out his direction, 'Pure Luxury' skirts that fine line between abstract style and commercial pop to create a wonderfully uplifting new release.

Fans of his work will no doubt flock to this new full-length, but 'Pure Luxury' will probably bring him even more attention than he has seen before. Every song on this record has its own distinct flair to it, giving it a diverse but still succinct sound that very few are able to pull off these days, and showcasing probably his most revered collection to date.
