A Place To Bury Strangers - 'See Through You'

6/10

Throughout their tenure, A Place To Bury Strangers have always found themselves askew from the regular conventions of the post-punk sound. While their style is undeniably rooted within the genre, they regularly dabble in harder and more brutal aesthetics to create a direction which is not only unique to them, but also offering up a fresh perspective on the limits they can push themselves. And with their previous collection 'Pinned' venturing further down that darker path, they return with their sixth studio album 'See Through You', a colossal juggernaut within their catalogue.

Prior to the release of this new album saw the departure of bassist Dion Lunadon and drummer Lia Simone Braswell, leaving frontman Oliver Ackermann with an almost clean slate in which to embark on his next creative journey. So 'See Through You' instantly marks itself as a far more different beast than what fans of the bands will be used to. While it remains a brooding and haunted collection of shuddering offerings, there is more focus poised towards the atmosphere this time around, leaving it more cinematic in places but without the broad and driven hooks they have showcased in the past.

It may not have the same edge as to what they have produced so far, but 'See Through You' still maintains enough fire and tenacity to keep the momentum going throughout. Raw and soaring energy remains the hallmark of this new release, and makes for a fascinating listen nevertheless.
