Prince Of Sweden - 'Beneath The Big Top'

8/10

Ever since he first emerged, London-based singer-songwriter James Phippen has used his Prince Of Sweden project to explore a more illustrious aesthetic than most. While occasionally dipping into a more conventional acoustic-led direction from time to time, much of his tenure has been spent exploring a wide variety of distinctive ambitions, broadening his musical evolution with every new release. And after an incredible run of efforts throughout these last few months, he now looks to cement his recent legacy with his debut studio album 'Beneath The Big Top', a record that builds upon that adventurous spirit so far.

While much of this new collection was quickly turned out as singles over the last few months, hearing his newfound venture all under one roof really heightens the songwriting prowess he has been pursuing recently. Creating this wonderfully alluring atmosphere that treads a similar line as Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds with its haunted yet poetic sensibilities, 'Beneath The Big Top' is this rich and illuminating offering that not only adds to his dynamic repertoire to date, but also gives the UK's new music scene something fresh to really get absorbed by.

The critical acclaim Prince Of Sweden has received over the years has always been justified, and 'Beneath The Big Top' shows that he is still very much on top of his creative game here. Brimming with such a warm and inviting presence with every cut, he shines as one of the more tantalising songwriters doing the rounds right now.
