It is almost hard to remember now but there was a period in the early 2010s when you couldn't turn a page in a magazine or switch on the radio without hearing something about Purity Ring. The band's abstract yet accessible electro-pop direction managed to ride that fine line between underground cult following and mainstream attraction so well that they ended up becoming one of the most engaging acts of that time. But after five years away, the Canadian pairing return to unveil their long-awaited third studio album 'WOMB', a record that sees them continue that now familiar sound.

There is something quite comfortable about turning on 'WOMB' for the first time, which is probably why that name was chosen. Usually when band's disappear for a prolonged period, it is to find some grounding to their work so that they can return refreshed and ready to bring the next wave in their sonic direction. But in the case of Purity Ring, this new collection sees them step right back into their old ways, delivering something on the verge of nostalgic in the process. You soon realise that very few managed to fill the space in which Purity Ring left behind and so their comeback almost feels like a time capsule of forgotten sounds and ideas.

Despite its lack of truly captivating compositions, there is still plenty to love on this new release. 'WOMB' manages to create this warped and otherworldly offering of spacious and atmospheric dream-pop that still retains many of the qualities we found endearing in them at the beginning. A strong return if not a little safe.
