RJD2 - 'Dame Fortune'

5/10

Having always proven himself as the masterful shape-shifter of the electronic world, producer Ramble Krohn aka RJD2 follows up his 2013 release 'More Is Than Isn't' with a soul-filled new full-length. Inspired by his time living in Philadelphia, 'Dame Fortune' aims to bring together an eclectic array of influences to create an almost-homage to the city of brotherly love and deliver yet another slice of musical exploration in the process.

Hiring the help of a number of varied vocalists and guest artists including Jordan Brown, Son Little, Phonte Coleman and Blueprint, this new release has this nostalgic yet post-modern feel to it. Like Picasso creating renaissance work, the connection to his influences are there but so far from his musical ambitions it is almost hard to see it gelling very well. The result is a mixed affair, filled with good intentions that don't always hit their mark.

Enjoyable in places, 'Dame Fortune' just hasn't got that spark that it needs to stand out. A great journey to go on but without any cohesive direction, the record has trouble making the mark it wants to.
