Rubblebucket - 'Survival Sounds'

9/10

Despite being one of America's most loved underground brass-loving indie acts for the last half decade, Brooklyn-based seven-piece Rubblebucket have kept themselves in the shadows over here for the past few years. But after a short run of shows and high-profile festival appearances on these shores this year, they have quickly amassed a loyal following of Brits just in time for the release of their latest studio album. Their third full-length 'Survival Sounds' is going to be their biggest introduction to their UK fans to date and from the start, it seems like they are looking to make one hell of an introduction.

From the off, 'Survival Sounds' looks to take the preconception of a brass-infused indie outfit and throw it on its head as rather than go for the full out fanfare, they keep all their instruments in moderation and allowed the album to play around with other influences as well. The album's opener 'On The Ground' is what Hot Chip would sound like without the electronics, while 'Rewind' is one of the best disco homages we have heard since Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky'. While the album does like to play around with genres and influences, the band never lose sight of their core style, which is to breathe life and happiness into their music.

It is a wonderfully diverse album with such a positive energy that never loses pace or momentum. From start to finish, it is joy to listen to and will no doubt increase their UK following by tenfold.
