Rudimental - 'Toast To Our Differences'

7/10

After kicking off their career with their brilliant debut single 'Feel The Love' back in 2012, Rudimental quickly cemented themselves as the new fathers of British drum n bass, releasing a flurry of equally brilliant tracks, all leading to the release of their acclaimed debut album 'Home' in 2013. But since then, the band have been sure to diversify their sound on continuing records, leaving the DnB pretence in the shadows and adopting a style with a more tropical and dancehall-infused flavour. This became their mantra on sophomore full-length 'We The Generation' and now their third LP 'Toast To Our Differences', which sees them far more comfortable in their new direction.

When 'We The Generation' was released, it didn't bring as much attention to the group as they would have hoped. With such a stark shift to the left, the album never quite made the same impact as their debut. But with a few years under their belt to hone their new sound, Rudimental's third effort is far more well-rounded and progressive release. While the DnB influences still try and poke their heads round the corner from time to time, 'Toast To Our Differences' is more about the group exploring their sound through the guise of contemporary and popular electronica, delivering a stronger and more accessible release.

It may not grab your attention from start to finish, usually thanks to a rather swollen tracklist, but this new LP still ticks all the boxes of what Rudimental stand for, bringing together an eclectic array of ideas that manage to gel surprisingly well. 'Toast To Our Differences' manages to hit all the spots that 'We The Generation' tried but failed on and breathes new life into these electronic stalwarts.
