SG Lewis - 'Dark'

8/10

Having spent the last few years releasing a flurry of electronically diverse singles and EPs, producer SG Lewis now returns with his latest release 'Dark', a subtle collection of diverse collaborations that have seen the beatmaker spread his creative wings and embark on a far more eclectic direction than we have heard from him before.

Even just reading through the list of collaborators on this new EP (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, AlunaGeorge, Drew Love, Bruno Major), it is clear that he has set out to create a wide and varied new collection that aims to push the boundaries of his own comfort zone. From the start, 'Dark' plays itself as a more club-ready release than much of his usual output. The opener 'Again' rekindles the majesty and wooziness of the 3am clubbing atmosphere, while 'A.A.T' sees him confront a more trap-inspired direction, showing that his particular brand of alt-electronica has this strong mixed appeal that can be branded into almost any genre.

He has certainly looked to impress on this new EP. And with a tight and purposeful intention throughout, 'Dark' sets itself as his most intriguing work to date. A wonderful blend of ideas and inclinations that despite their varied sounds, all manage to come together and create a succinct and cohesive release that still maintains his core sound.
