Sinkane - 'Dépaysé'

7/10

Over the years, the name Sinkane has become renowned as one of the more cutting edge musicians in the Sudanese-influenced funk sound. With six studio albums under his belt, his solo project has slowly moved from humble beginnings to a full and functioning band, whereby each of the other members now feel just as much a part of his project as Sinkane does. And now as he returns with his seventh studio effort 'Dépaysé', the singer and producer has looked to add a thought-provoking and political message to his usual flair of funk-filled riffs and uplifting direction.

The word Dépaysé translates in French as “to be removed from one’s habitual surroundings”, which in this case has been interpreted to represent the struggles of an immigrant looking for a new home in the age of Trump. And while Sinkane is usually no stranger to concept records, this one certainly has more of an impact when it comes from him, an immigrant with a similar story to tell. Filled with his usual afro-funk sound and charismatic presence, the record flips back and forth between this joyful and upbeat tempo, and penetrative vocals that give glimmers of the record's overall story arch, giving the release a multifaceted angle that sets it apart from the usual self-indulgence that can come with a concept release.

In all, if there were no mention of the tale running through it, you probably would not even know it was there. 'Dépaysé' continues the strong and vibrant sound that the frontman has been producing for more than a decade, forever evolving his sound and delivering a wild and heady mix that fans of his work will enjoy once again.
