SOPHIE - 'Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-Insides'

6/10

Since first introducing herself to the scene many years ago, SOPHIE has been an acquired taste to say the least. With a flare for bonkers production and knife-edge gear changes, her first release 'Product' saw her gather together the mixture of outlandish singles released in the guise of her PC Music days as a curriculum vitae of her work to date. Now moved over to the less pigeonholed home of Transgressive Records, the producer has aimed for a more cohesive sound and in some cases, less diverse approach on her debut album.

Opening up with the out-of-character yet still brilliant 'It's Okay To Cry', the new record 'Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-Insides' sees the producer rein in some of the more bizarre sides of her direction but still looks to dazzle us with a range of unconventional productions that let us know it is still her. Yet while the record starts off very promising with a number of bone-crunching numbers, the momentum seems to fall away from time to time where she slips in long, drawn-out soundscapes that seem to slam the breaks on the release at any time it gets going.

The result is an experience to say the very least. While it may not have that same instant grab-factor of her original work, 'Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-Insides' still sees the producer looking to push the boundaries of pop music, and although it may not be entirely gold this time, it certainly throws up some fascinating ideas.
