Thee Oh Sees - 'A Weird Exits'

5/10

You know something would be wrong with the world if we didn't get to hear a new Thee Oh Sees album this year, and true to form, the psychedelic outfit return with their eleventh studio release under their current moniker, 'A Weird Exits'. And despite being one of the most consistent and prolific bands in the world, we have always been overly impressed with their general output, until now.

This is not to say that their latest work is bad in any way, just that unlike their previous material, 'A Weird Exits' seems to see the band head further towards the sheer lunacy of their sound, something which in full flow can be a grating experience. While it does have some redeeming features in the form of tracks like 'Plastic Plant', a brilliantly fuzzed-out odyssey, much of the release really does test your patience at times and makes for an exhaustive listen.

It may be a matter of preference but when compared to their last few releases, 'A Weird Exits' seems far more self-indulgent than we are used to hearing. Much of the record feels rushed or incomplete, leaving you thinking how it could have sounded rather than how it does.
