Ty Segall - 'First Taste'

7/10

Despite only being 32-years-old, singer and multi-instrumentalist Ty Segall already has a back catalogue that would make more seasoned songwriter's blush. Averaging a new studio album every year since 2008, he has been a pinnacle and prolific musician in the world of spun-out and experimental compositions, and yet never seems to have an off day. So with the release of his eleventh studio album 'First Taste', it was clear that he wanted to go even further into the depth of musical self-discovery as this collection sees him bring in an even wider array of instrumentation to the fold.

Ty Segall has always looked for new and inventive sounds to define his music, but with this new album featuring instruments like a Japanese koto and Greek bouzouki, you can be sure that this is one of his most far-out records to date. Blending these diverse new sounds with his usual hook of fuzzy guitars and funk-laden bass grooves seems to come eerily naturally to him. Pulsing and swooning its way through the release in equal measure, the frontman has given his latest material a multicultural feel that is almost impossible to pin down, giving us one of the most eccentric and eclectic albums in his cannon.

Fans of his music will no doubt be lapping up this one as it fully embraces the wild and warped sensibilities that he has always looked to create as a solo artist. 'First Taste' may not be his most endearing collection, but what it lacks in memorable hooks, it completely makes up for in unusual atmosphere and captivating intent.
