Ty Segall - 'Freedom's Goblin'

7/10

It barely seems like no time has passed since we were last talking about the latest Ty Segall album, but over the last few years, the frontman has proven himself to be an extremely prolific entity in the world of psych-rock. With his previous self-titled release arriving almost one year ago to the day, he returns with an extensive 19-track release 'Freedom's Goblin', a record that really sees him come out of his skin and try even more new ideas than we thought possible.

Segall has always been an eclectic musician, adopting new styles with ease and aplomb, but his tenth studio album sees him go that little bit further. Not only are we seeing him in a more comfortable zone with his riffs and guitar work, but we can always see his intentions on what he wants to create in the future. 'Freedom's Goblin' sees a far more experimental angle than we usually know him for, adopting a more funk-based angle and ultimately unleashing his playful side in most places.

It maybe a bit jarring for those that have been listening to his music for years to come back to, but this new release seems so much more confident than what he usually creates. A diverse and enjoyable work with some brilliant standout singles throughout.
